Vienna is a city where history comes alive, evident in every corner, palace, and street. The city is so enchanting and vibrant that you'll likely want to return again and again, with each visit revealing new facets of Viennese culture, art, music, and architecture. Whether you’re visiting during the magical Christmas market season (which generally runs from mid-November to Christmas), enjoying Vienna as a stop on a Danube river cruise, or exploring independently, here are some experiences you simply cannot miss on your trip to the City of Music.
Schönbrunn Palace
Constructed in 1696 as a hunting lodge, Schönbrunn Palace later became the magnificent residence of one of the most admired royal families of Austria, the Habsburg.
Open to the public today, this palace invites you to step back in time as you tour the Habsburgs’ apartments, the grand Hall of Ceremonies, and the ornate Mirror Room.
Be sure to spend time in the expansive gardens—especially beautiful when decorated for the holidays. During the Christmas market season, Schönbrunn also hosts one of the city’s most picturesque markets, with charming stalls set against the palace’s imperial backdrop.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral
St. Stephen’s Cathedral is Vienna’s most cherished architectural marvel. This 12th-century Gothic cathedral has stood through centuries of history, from the Turkish siege in 1683 to the mourners who gathered here for Mozart’s funeral and Napoleon’s farewell proclamation in 1805.
St. Stephen’s resilience is evident in its survival of two WWII bombings. Its spire and colorful tiled roof are breathtaking, and it’s a must-visit landmark that embodies Vienna’s historical spirit.
Kunsthistorisches Museum
For art lovers, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is a dream come true, featuring a vast collection of masterpieces from legendary artists such as Titian, Van Dyck, Velázquez, and Rubens.
This world-renowned fine arts museum is an exquisite place to wander through Vienna’s artistic history, and if you’re visiting during winter, it provides a cozy and enriching retreat from the chill.
Naschmarkt
Vienna’s vibrant Naschmarkt is a lively and bustling marketplace where locals and visitors gather Monday through Saturday. Located in the Wieden District, this outdoor market is ideal for browsing fresh, local produce, meats, and cheeses, and it’s a feast for the senses. You’ll also find cozy cafés and eateries within the market where you can take a break, sip Viennese coffee, and indulge in some of the city’s best street food.
Tiergarten Schönbrunn
Tiergarten Schönbrunn, or Schönbrunn Zoo, dates back to 1752, making it the world’s oldest operating zoo. Originally an exotic menagerie for Austrian royalty, today it’s home to nearly 9,000 animals and offers a unique perspective on Vienna’s royal past. If you’re visiting with family or simply enjoy wildlife, Tiergarten is a fantastic choice year-round.
House of Music (Haus der Musik)
At the House of Music, immerse yourself in Vienna’s classical legacy through exhibits on its most famous composers—Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Mahler, and Strauss. The interactive displays give insights into the art of sound and music. This small museum brings Vienna’s musical history to life and is perfect for visitors looking to appreciate the city’s unparalleled cultural contributions.
Vienna State Opera
A highlight of Viennese life, the Vienna State Opera is a beacon for music and art lovers. A 40-minute guided tour provides a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, renowned for its acoustics and architectural beauty. Even if you can’t catch a performance, the tour is a memorable way to experience Viennese culture up close.
MuseumsQuartier Wien
Just outside the Ringstrasse, the MuseumsQuartier Wien is an impressive complex that brings together some of Vienna’s most prominent museums. From classic works in the Leopold Museum to contemporary art from artists like Andy Warhol, this quarter has something for everyone. Plan to spend at least half a day here to take in all that this remarkable cultural space has to offer.
Hofburg Palace
Dating back to the 13th century, Hofburg Palace is another historical landmark where visitors can explore Vienna’s imperial past. This grand complex includes numerous attractions, from the Swiss Court to the Imperial Apartments. Set aside a significant amount of time to fully experience Hofburg’s regal atmosphere, including its role as the former winter residence of the Habsburgs.
Belvedere Palace
The Belvedere consists of two Baroque palaces connected by beautifully landscaped gardens that date back to the 17th century. The art collection within includes famous Austrian works, most notably Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss. Strolling through the French-style gardens and admiring the stunning Baroque architecture make this a standout Vienna experience.
Museum Judenplatz
Once part of Vienna’s Jewish Ghetto in the 13th century, Museum Judenplatz preserves the rich contributions of the Jewish community to Vienna’s development. This historical site was also the location of one of Europe’s largest synagogues before its destruction. The museum offers a thoughtful journey through the lives and contributions of Viennese Jews.
Vienna’s Christmas Markets
If you’re fortunate enough to visit Vienna during the holiday season, the city’s famous Christmas markets—from the extravagant displays at Rathausplatz to the smaller, cozy market at Spittelberg—add an extra layer of magic. These markets typically run from mid-November through Christmas, filling the air with the scent of mulled wine and gingerbread and offering beautiful artisan crafts and holiday treats. For river cruisers, docking in Vienna at this time offers a chance to experience these markets firsthand.
